Windmill was founded in January 1990 by Steve Beckett after the kitchen company he worked for went under due to the late-80s housing crash. While meeting with the administrator, he and his colleague Eddie decided to start their own business. With 10 years of experience at Everley Woodcrafts, Steve was well-prepared to create a factory that offered better-quality kitchen carcasses, featuring adjustable legs, Blum hardware and solid 18mm backs.
Starting above a joinery shop in Brighton, Steve used the £40/week enterprise allowance scheme introduced by Maggie Thatcher and within 10 months, he moved to a new factory in Newhaven and invested in larger machinery. Early customers included Bloor Homes, Alfred McAlpine, and Croudace.
After Eddie’s sudden death in 1996, Steve continued to grow the business, moving to a larger factory in Burgess Hill in 2003. Windmill expanded over the years, adding office space with showroom and a mezzanine while always staying focused on quality.
In 2023, Steve and Andrew crossed paths. Andrew previously owned H.K.Creations, a small kitchen supplier he started at in 2016. After experiencing significant growth within the developer market and drawing inspiration from the owner of a significant manufacturing facility, Andrew decided it was time to take the next step. In June 2024 Andrew purchased Windmill Kitchens and changed the trading name to Windmill Projects with the agreement that Steve would continue working with the company. Steve’s extensive experience, combined with Andrew’s fresh ideas and modern business approach, ensures that the Windmill name will remain synonymous with high-quality kitchen and wardrobe manufacturing in the South of the UK for years to come
